The clinical research career path

How people commonly move from entry-level roles to coordinator to clinical research associate, and what each stage pays.

Stage 1: Entry level

Typical titles
Clinical research assistant, research assistant, clinical trial assistant, regulatory or data assistant
What the work involves
Supporting a study team: filing and tracking documents, entering data, scheduling, helping with participant visits and learning Good Clinical Practice.
Published pay (US)
Varies widely by employer and region. As a reference point, the lowest band of published coordinator pay is about $40,000–$48,000 a year (government wage data, via Hyring). Check local job postings for assistant roles.
Typical timing
Many people move up after about one to two years. Some who already have clinical or patient-facing experience start directly at stage 2.
Getting to the next step
Keep a record of the study tasks you've handled. Coordinator hiring managers ask about them.

Stage 2: Clinical research coordinator (CRC)

Typical titles

Published pay (US)
Glassdoor reports a median total pay of about $74,000 a year and a typical range of $58,000–$95,000 (Glassdoor, October 2026).
Typical timing
Many CRA postings ask for roughly two years of site or monitoring experience. The exact requirement varies by employer.
Getting to the next step
Learn monitoring visits from the site's side, and describe your site work in the skills sponsors look for.

Stage 3: Clinical research associate (CRA)

Typical titles
In-house CRA, CRA I–II, senior CRA, lead CRA
What the work involves
Monitoring studies for a sponsor or research organization: site visits, checking data against source documents, protocol compliance and participant safety oversight.

Later options include senior or lead CRA, clinical trial management, and quality or regulatory roles.
